What is the need for the new 21st century Carroll County Zoning Law?
I have started to read them and found them somewhat confusing?
Why so many changes at one time?
I know this sounds old fashion but when I can’t read something that I can’t understand it leads me to believe that someone is hiding something??

The Carroll County Zoning ordinances were first enacted in the early 1970′s, and have had only a few changes since that time. In the 21st Century, non-traditional land use needs, environmental protection needs, competing and incompatible land uses (to name a few) have rendered our 1970′s-era zoning ordinances out of date and unsuitable to protect the citizens, businesses, and environment in our County. Additionally, without the protections contained in the updated ordinances, our County is ripe for unwelcome development attracted by the Hoosier Heartland Corridor.

Any substantial legislative document (like zoning ordinances) is confusing to just “sit down and read.” I recommend that you start with the Zoning Districts section on page 68, and review the language and tables to become oriented with the structure of the ordinance with respect to more familiar types of land use – like residential, agriculture and commercial. Then, you can check the different sections based upon the land use in sections of interest to you — like Wind Towers, Signs, and the language in the Supplemental Requirements section starting on page 84.

If you have specific questions, please feel free to contact the Zoning Steering Committee through this website, or attend one of the upcoming public meetings, the next of which is April 26 at 7:00 at the Courthouse in the Commissioner’s room.

Keep checking the website for information about public meetings and Zoning Ordinance adoption schedule.
